Details that led to the arrest of Joseph Waswa, a man who hit news headlines in 2019 for mimicking President Uhuru Kenyatta in a fake 10 million deal aimed at swindling Sameer tycoon Naushad Merali can now be revealed.

K24 Digital has established that Waswa was nabbed on Wednesday for allegedly fraudulently obtaining ksh2.2 million from businesswoman Jackeline Njoroge.

A police officer who spoke to this reporter in confidence as he is not authorized to speak to the media said that the suspect will spend his night at the Nairobi Area police station.

“Plans are underway to arraign him in court tomorrow and most likely he will be charged with obtaining money by false pretence,” the officer said, adding that the suspect was grilled by officers on the better part of Wednesday afternoon.

Waswa is not new to fraud allegations and he is facing tens of charges in court over similar incidents.

For instance, in July 2019, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss George Kinoti told the media that Waswa was a wanted man as he was linked to a group of fraudsters who defrauded foreigners ksh15 million in a fake coffee and artefacts supply deal.

Others mentioned in the deal include Stephen Andere, Evelyne Osore and Berlin Owino.

The deal came into the limelight after Anti-fraud officers managed to flag down the money that was sent by Damir Ryskulov a Kazakhstan national who had already fallen victim to the gang.

In February 2019, he was also nabbed for stealing from Merali, who had been tricked into purchasing land in Kilimani area.

He was arrested after the call and arraigned in court where he denied the charges.

Known for his flashy lifestyle, Waswa hangs out with the who is who in the country.

He owns a fleet of flashy cars and is known to be extremely generous.
