A top businessman who has been in a Burundian jail after he was found guilty of engaging in drug trafficking managed to escape from prison on Wednesday.
Joseph Mboya Nyamuthe accused of drug trafficking escaped Murembwe Central prison that is highly guarded.
Reports indicate that Mboya exhibited symptoms of Cholera and was rushed to Rumonge hospital where he escaped.
According to the reports, at the hospital, Mboya who is a son in law of Hezekiah Oyugi, former Permanent Secretary in President Daniel Moi’s government escaped yet he was under the eyes of two guards.
Currently, the two officers have been arrested and they are being accused of aiding the suspect to escape, K24 Digital can reveal.
It has also emerged that a top police boss in Burundi also played a role in assisting Mboya to flee.
Mboya was arrested in March 2021 after it emerged that he was involved in drug trafficking through Somalia to Burundi under the disguise that the drugs were medicine.
It is alleged that he was working in cohorts with top government officials and a Turkish national.
The Turkish national was the first to be arrested and days later Mboya was also nabbed despite Kenyan officials denying to comment on the matter.
The Turkish national was nabbed at Bujumbura Airport on March 2021, trafficking narcotics.
It is worth noting that former Burundi President Pierre Nkurunzisa was the Chief guest when Mboya was opening his pharmaceutical company in Burundi.
Mboya who hails from Rangwe constituency in Homabay County has declared interest in contesting for the parliamentary seat.
His arrest and detention was once part of the talk held by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Burundian counterpart Evariste Ndashimiye on June 1, 2021.
