Indian doctor reveals medical conditions Raila was battling
By Paulette Mboga, October 15, 2025A senior doctor at Devamatha Hospital in India has revealed the medical condition that led to the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Dr Alphonse, one of the lead cardiologists who attended to Raila, confirmed that he had been battling several chronic illnesses before his passing.

Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Dr Alphonse said Raila was diabetic, hypertensive, and had chronic kidney disease. She explained that by the time he was brought in, his condition was already severe and complicated.
“Whatever information we got is that he was diabetic, hypertensive, chronic kidney disease patient. You could see him with a significant oedema of the right lower limb… the right leg,” she said, describing the physical symptoms the team noticed upon his arrival at the hospital.
Doctors tried everything to save him
According to Dr Alphonse, the medical team made every possible effort to stabilise Raila, including conducting continuous CPR and other emergency procedures. However, despite their interventions, his body did not respond.

“Despite our continued CPR and other measures, we couldn’t make him survive,” she told reporters. “We are very sorry to inform you that he (Raila) is no more with us, and our very sincere condolences and prayers for his family and the Kenyan people.”
Dr Alphonse added that the hospital had pulled together a team of experts to handle the situation as soon as Raila was admitted, but his condition deteriorated quickly.

She explained that chronic illnesses like diabetes and kidney disease often lead to life-threatening complications, especially in elderly patients.
“We did everything humanly possible. His condition was very complicated, but we gave our best,” she said, her voice filled with emotion.
Final moments at Devamatha Hospital
The doctor said Raila’s final moments were spent under close medical supervision, surrounded by a team that fought to keep him alive. The staff at Devamatha Hospital later joined in mourning the Kenyan leader.
Raila’s remains are expected to be transported back to Kenya on Thursday, October 16, 2025, where state arrangements for his burial are underway.
His death has continued to draw messages of condolence from across the world, with leaders describing him as a hero whose contribution to democracy and justice will never be forgotten.
