IG Kanja urges parliament to allocate more funds to NPS to tackle transnational crimes
By Nancy Marende, August 23, 2025Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) Douglas Kanja has called on the National Assembly to allocate more resources to the Service to strengthen its capacity in combating transnational crimes.
Speaking during the 3rd Leadership Retreat of the 13th Parliament in Mombasa on August 22, 2025, IG Kanja emphasised that increased funding would enhance human capital, continuous personnel training, and logistical support for the NPS.
“This would allow the NPS to be better equipped to tackle evolving trends in transnational crimes, such as cybercrime, human trafficking, wildlife trophy trafficking, drug trafficking, money laundering, and organ harvesting, among others,” he stated.
Further, IG Kanja underscored the importance of candid dialogue, consensus building, and strengthening frameworks that uphold the Republic.
He urged all arms of government to strike a balance in discharging their distinct roles, stressing that coexistence and cooperation are essential for safeguarding national interests.
On the judiciary, the IG remarked that court orders should not only be reasonable but also aligned with public interest and the common good.
He further assured both Parliament and the Judiciary that the NPS remains committed to guaranteeing their personal security, given the risks associated with their offices.

Security budget allocation
This comes a few months after the National Treasury allocated Ksh464.9 billion towards security in the 2025/2026 budget.
In the 2024 budget, national security was allocated a total of Ksh377.5 billion, which is Ksh87.4 billion more than the 2025/2026 budget.
Speaking when he read the budget in parliament in June 2025, National Treasury CS John Mbadi allocated Ksh125.7 billion to the National Police Service and a further Ksh51.4 billion to the National Intelligence Service.
Mbadi also allocated Ksh32.5 billion for Internal Security and National Administration and Ksh38.1 billion to Prison Services.
He has proposed an additional allocation of Ksh10 billion to cater for the leasing of police motor vehicles and Ksh3.6 billion for the police modernisation programme.
To combat crime and enhance the administration of justice, CS Mbadi has proposed the allocation of Ksh1.2 billion for the construction and modernisation of National Forensic Facilities.
“A stable and secure environment fosters investment, trade and overall economic growth,” Mbadi said.
