IEBC voter registration: What to carry, requirements and online verification
By William Muthama, September 29, 2025Kenyans will have another chance to register as voters ahead of the 2027 General Election. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will begin a nationwide mass voter registration exercise on Monday, September 29, 2025.
Voter registration is a process that ensures only eligible citizens participate in elections. By registering, Kenyans gain the right to cast their ballots and influence leadership at both national and local levels.

The IEBC says the exercise is an opportunity for new voters to get listed, for those who have changed residence to update their details, and for all citizens to confirm their information.
Below are the key requirements and processes to note.
Eligibility for registration
According to Article 83 of the Constitution, eligibility to register as a voter is based on several conditions. A person must be a Kenyan citizen and at least 18 years old.
They are also required to present either a valid national identification card or a valid Kenyan passport.

The law further provides that an individual must not have registered elsewhere, must not have been convicted of an election offence within the last five years, and must not have been declared to be of unsound mind.
In addition, a person who is already listed in the Register of Voters is not allowed to register again.
Required documents
To complete the registration, citizens are required to present their original Kenyan ID card or passport. These are the only documents accepted by IEBC officials.
The commission also captures biometric data such as fingerprints and a photograph to ensure that every voter has a unique profile, preventing duplicate entries in the voter roll.

The mass registration will run for 30 days across all constituencies, starting on Monday, September 29, 2025, and ending on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
IEBC officers will be stationed at polling centres, schools, markets, and other public places to make the process as accessible as possible.
For Kenyans in the diaspora, registration will be available at designated embassies and consulates, although participation is limited to presidential elections.
Verifying voter details
Registered voters are encouraged to check their details early. This can be done through the IEBC online portal using an ID or passport number.
For those without internet access, voter verification is also available via SMS or through visits to constituency offices. Confirming voter details in advance helps avoid delays or confusion on election day.
With the 2027 General Election approaching, the IEBC emphasises the importance of early registration.
Doing so not only prevents last-minute congestion but also strengthens the credibility of the entire electoral process. The commission has reminded Kenyans that the right to vote begins with being on the voter roll.
