IEBC unveils plan to beat constitutional timelines following delay in commission’s reconstitution
By Mabonga Makhanu, July 19, 2025The recently sworn-in IEBC chairperson, Erastus Ethekon, has unveiled the commission’s plan to meet the constitutional timelines despite the prolonged delay in its reconstitution.
Speaking during a press briefing held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, Ethekon acknowledged the setbacks caused by the late reconstitution of the electoral body but affirmed that the commission is fully aware of the urgent need to catch up and deliver on its mandate.
He noted that although the commission came into place much later than anticipated, the realities of their constitutional duties remain unchanged, and as such, they have no option but to rise to the occasion.
In a clear demonstration of urgency, the chair highlighted that the commission had already begun working over the weekends, emphasising that there will be no room for rest or delays.
He also affirmed that the commission is expected to work around the clock to ensure critical milestones in the electoral calendar are achieved on time.
“In regard to the delays, we all know that the country delayed in reconstituting the commission. You realise that it is the commission that transacts the business of our elections. Be it as it is, we have to accept the reality and face it. We know we have to work extra hours—you have seen that even this weekend we are working. We have no time off, and we will do what is humanly possible on our part.” The chair stated.
Message to stakeholders
However, the chair also emphasised that while the IEBC is prepared to work overtime to fulfil its role, support from key institutions remains vital.

He called on Parliament, the National Treasury, and other relevant stakeholders to offer the necessary backing—both logistical and financial—so that the commission can execute its mandate within the constrained time frame.
“But most importantly, we require the support of other stakeholders like Parliament, the Treasury, and other key players to give us the necessary support so that, within the limited timeline, we will be able to execute our agenda in the shortest time possible.” He added.
According to him, the commission will do everything within its means to beat the constitutional timelines as required, stressing that this is not just a commitment but a responsibility that must be met for the sake of electoral integrity and national stability.
