Ichung’wah commends Kindiki and hints at future support for presidency quest

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has praised Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as a proud son of the Tharaka community and hinted at the possibility of future political support from Mt Kenya leaders when the time is right.

Speaking during a high-level political gathering in Kiambaa, Kiambu County, on Sunday, July 13, 2025, Ichung’wah lauded the appointment of Kindiki as Deputy President by President William Ruto and reminded the audience of the role Tharaka Nithi played in shaping Kenya’s political history.

In his remarks, Ichung’wah sought to emphasise unity within the Kenya Kwanza administration while also acknowledging Kindiki’s roots and the potential for future leadership.

“Isn’t this Deputy President our child from Tharaka? Or is he not one of us?”

He recalled the pivotal role that Tharaka Nithi played in the 2007 elections, particularly in delivering a last-minute victory for President Mwai Kibaki.

“When Kibaki was under pressure, who rescued him? Wasn’t it the people of Tharaka Nithi? When we said the votes would come from Tharaka Nithi, Kibaki returned to power, right?”

Kindiki tipped for future

Ichung’wah then appeared to suggest that, just as Tharaka Nithi once helped deliver power to Kibaki, the Mt Kenya region might one day rally behind Kindiki when the time comes.

“Now even this one (Kindiki), when his time comes, we too will go to support him.”

He concluded by reminding the audience that it is President Ruto who has trusted Kindiki with national leadership.

“And right now, it is President Ruto who has given them the job.”

Ichung’wah’s remarks come amid visible signs of political realignment within central Kenya, as regional leaders appear to be consolidating support ahead of the 2027 General Election. His speech was met with applause, especially from leaders allied to Kindiki, who view him as a rising star in the national arena.

The event further solidified the growing influence of Kindiki within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, positioning him as a key figure in Kenya’s future political landscape.
