Govt announces Kibaki burial date

The late retired President Emilio Mwai Kibaki will be laid to rest at his Othaya home on Saturday, April 30.

Speaking during a press conference, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i who is part of the State funeral committee has announced that prior to his burial, a national funeral service will be held on Friday, April 29 at Nyayo stadium.

His body will lie in state in the parliament from Monday, April 25 to Wednesday, April 27 for the members of the public to pay their last respect.

Kibaki passed away on April 22 at the age of 90 years.

The announcement of his death was made by President Uhuru Kenyatta who lauded him for his outstanding leadership.

Led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and a host of notable political figures, Kenyans continue to mourn and eulogise the third Head of State.

In his presidential proclamation with respect to the death of Kibaki, Uhuru eulogised the ex-Head of State as a leader who strove so hard and accomplished much for the country.

Uhuru commended the late ex-President for his dedication in his decades-long service as a public officer. The Head of State outlined several positions that Kibaki served in diligently before his assumption of power as the third President of Kenya.

“As we mourn this immeasurable loss, we recall with eternal gratitude President Kibaki’s patriotic journey in service to his country, which can be traced way back to Kenya’s fight for liberation,” Uhuru’s statement read in part.
