Government closes major roads to ensure safety at WRC Safari Rally in Naivasha

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr.Fred Matiang’i has announced the closure of major roads ahead of the much awaited World Rally Championships.

Matiang’i made the announcement through a gazette notice stating that Kikopey–Elementaita Village road will be closed for all vehicles between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The CS also directed heavy commercial vehicles weighing above 3 tones to steer off the gazetted roads between 12:00 a.m. and 7 p.m. on set days.

“After 0600 Hrs all heavy commercial vehicles weighing 3 tones and above are required to park at the nearest designated parking and await the above road opening time,” the gazette notice read in part.

Trucks plying the Eldoret–Nakuru Highway will park at the nearest designated parking on Thursday, June 24.

The same exercise will take place on Friday, June 25 along the Kericho–Nakuru Highway.

On the Nyahururu–Nakuru Highway, the exercise will take place on Saturday, June 26 as trucks plying along the Mombasa–Nairobi–Mai Mahiu–Naivasha Highway will be barred from accessing the road on Sunday, June 27.

However, it was not specified when trucks will be barred from accessing the Narok–Mai Mahiu road.

“Pursuant to section 69 (b) of the Traffic Act of the laws of Kenya, notice is given that the following public roads (aforementioned) will be closed to all heavy commercial vehicles weighing 3 tones and above to guarantee safe and secure operation of the World Rally Championships (WRC) Safari Rally Kenya, 2021,” the notice read.

“The public is further notified that the following under listed road (Kikopey–Elementaita Village road) will be closed to all users to guarantee and secure operation of the World Rally Championships (WRC) Safari Rally Kenya, 2021,” the statement added.
