Four officers attached to the National Police Reservists (NPR) were on Monday, January 10 afternoon shot dead in an ambush carried out by suspected bandits in Garissa County.

A police report seen by K24 Digital reveals that the incident took place between Libpi and Abdisugow junction in Garissa County.

The ambush, according to the police, was carried out by five bandits who ambushed a Probox motor vehicle that was carrying the four officers.

“Today 10th January 2022 at about 1240 hours between Liboi and Abdisugow junction, about five (5) bandits ambushed a Probox motor vehicle carrying four (4) NPR personnel, killed all the four (4) and took three out of their four AK 47 rifles,” the report read in part.

The four police officers killed in the ambush were identified as Doof Ibrahim, Mohamed Aden, Mohamed FNU and Hashim Fnu.

Their bodies have since been taken to Liboi Sub-County Hospital awaiting postmortem.

The attack by the bandits is believed to be a revenge mission as some of the bandits were recently ambushed and killed by the police while they were ferrying foodstuff to their colleagues.

Following the attack, a joint operation that brings together officers drawn from the Kenya Defence Forces, regular police and NPR officers has swung into action in the area to nab the bandits.

The attack comes just four days after other four police officers were killed by suspected Al Shabaab militants in Lamu County.

Lamu County has seen an upsurge in the number of attacks targeting locals and police officers. In the last one week alone, over ten people have been killed in separate attacks.

These attacks have prompted the Ministry of Interior to order dusk to dawn curfew which kicks off at 6:00 pm and ends at 6:00 am in the county.
