Veteran journalist Macharia Gaitho on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, mourned his late wife Christine Macharia on her second anniversary.

In a statement, Gaitho penned an emotional message to her late wife who died of cancer on December 3, 2022, after a long battle with an illness.

“Two years ago today, I lost the love of my life. They say time heals, but never fully,” he said, noting that he remains a lonely man since the tragic incident happened.

“In the loneliness, there will always be triggers of some cherished memory, and the tears start flowing. The children and I still miss you terribly. Forever in our hearts, dearest Christine,” he added.

Gaitho survives with seven children from his marriage with his late wife and has a total of seven grandchildren.

Christine was born on June 5, 1961, and succumbed to cancer on December 3, 2024.

Life after wife’s death

Gaitho has on distinct occasions noted that he dearly misses the company and love of his late wife. On February 14, 2023, his children surprised him with warm messages during Valentine’s Day.

Gaitho revealed that he had planned out a lonely day ahead in memory of his late wife Christine when the children mobbed him with love.

“Forever, I’ve plotted the most creative ways to skive Valentine’s Day expectations. This year I woke up on Feb 14 contemplating a lonely, sad day. Then the children came through for me. I am not alone!!! Thank You #TheMacharians, you are everything. Sleep well, my eternal Valentine,” Gaitho said.

Gaitho’s career

The veteran journalist with close to four decades in the industry started out as a Design graduate from the University of Nairobi in the 80s before branching into media.

He later joined the Economic Review from 1993 to 1998 as the managing editor in charge of politics when the publication closed shop.

In 2000, he joined Nation Media Group as a special projects editor and rose through the ranks to become the managing editor for special projects until his retirement in 2016.

He became a consultant editor and runs a weekly Daily Nation newspaper column.

Gaitho is known for his critical and hard-hitting pieces, which at some point put him at loggerheads with the ruling governments.
