Kenya is mourning the loss of Ambassador Boaz Mbaya, a distinguished career civil servant and former Permanent Secretary, who passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2025.

His death marks the end of an era for a man who dedicated decades to public service, particularly in shaping Kenya’s foreign policy and diplomatic engagements on the global stage.

News of his passing was met with an outpouring of grief from leaders and citizens alike, who remembered his profound contributions to the nation.

Mudavadi mourns Mbaya

Among the first to express his condolences was Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who eulogised Ambassador Mbaya as a beacon of integrity and an astute diplomat.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Ambassador Boaz Mbaya this morning. The Valogooli community has lost a towering civic leader and mentor,” Mudavadi said in a statement.

“My heartfelt condolences go to his wife, Florence Mbaya, their family, relatives, and friends. May you find comfort as you mourn a devoted family man and a patriotic leader who served Kenya with distinction..”

Mudavadi further highlighted Mbaya’s calm demeanour and sharp intellect, qualities that served him well in navigating complex international relations.

“I have lost a dear friend and political confidante. The bond we shared was rooted in mutual respect and unwavering trust. I fondly recall our exchange of ideas when he led the Former and Retired Ambassadors Association of Kenya (FRAA) to my office in October 2024,” the Prime Cabinet Secretary added.

Seasoned diplomat

Ambassador Mbaya’s journey in the diplomatic field began in the early years of independent Kenya, a period when the young nation was actively forging its identity and establishing its presence on the world stage.

He quickly distinguished himself with his keen understanding of international law and relations, rising through the ranks in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

His early assignments saw him serve in various capacities, gathering vital experience in multilateral diplomacy and bilateral relations.

Over his illustrious career, he held critical diplomatic postings in key capitals around the world. He served as a diplomat in Ethiopia, Tanzania and France, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening economic ties and fostering cultural exchange.

Beyond his direct diplomatic postings, Mbaya also served as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, providing crucial administrative and strategic leadership.

In this capacity, he oversaw the implementation of Kenya’s foreign policy objectives, ensuring coordination across various missions and departments.
