Fans breach gate at Kasarani, flood stadium for Morocco clash
By Kenneth Mwenda, August 10, 2025Security at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, came under heavy scrutiny on Sunday, August 10, 2025, after a large group of fans breached one of the gates and forced their way into the stadium ahead of Harambee Stars’ crucial CHAN 2024 Group A showdown with Morocco.
The incident occurred with eyewitnesses reporting a surge of supporters overwhelming security personnel and flooding into the venue without proper screening. Videos shared on social media showed fans sprinting through.

Security failures
The breach revived painful memories of similar incidents earlier in the tournament. During Kenya’s group-stage match against DR Congo, a stampede and unauthorised entry led to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) being fined Ksh646, 000 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Additional fines included Ksh1,292,000 for the assault of CAF personnel and guests, plus a warning over fire ignition inside the stadium.

In a separate ruling just days ago, CAF handed FKF another Ksh646, 000 fine – with Ksh323,000 suspended – over security lapses during the Morocco vs Angola fixture. The latest breach raises fresh questions about whether the federation and stadium authorities have done enough to address safety and crowd management concerns.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that Kenya risks damaging its reputation as a capable host for major football events if such incidents persist. The Kasarani gate breach not only violates CAF safety and security regulations but also puts spectators at risk of injury, particularly in high-pressure games with massive turnouts.

With more than 40,000 fans, the breach highlighted the difficulty of managing crowd surges when demand for entry exceeds both the ticketing and security capacity.
The Harambee Stars are chasing a result that could seal top spot in Group A and book a place in the quarter-finals.
