Armed police officers stormed a Meru hotel on Monday, May 31 and disrupted a political meeting by aspirants seeking the nomination of United Democratic Alliance party (UDA).

Confirming the incident, police said the organisers disregarded Covid-19 containment measures by holding the meeting at Gatimene gardens in Meru.

UDA Secretary General Veronica Maina had convened the meeting which involved aspirants from the counties of Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Laikipia, Isiolo, Marsabit and Samburu.

In a video making rounds online, the Meru Division Officer who was accompanied by uniformed officers is seen arguing with the organizers of the party.

According to the DO, the meeting had been legally constituted even as the aspirants maintained that they were following the set rules.

In a rejoinder, UDA Sec Gen denied accusations that the meeting was convened without the knowledge of relevant authorities.

“We do not need a police permit for this. It’s not a public rally,” the UDA Sec Gen said.
