Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary (CS) nominee Eric Muriithi has revealed he is worth Ksh 31 million.
Appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments for vetting on Friday, August 2, 2024, the 32-year-old set to become President William Ruto’s youngest CS if his nomination is approved by parliament, disclosed that he acquired his wealth from venturing into farming activities.
“My net worth is Ksh31 million. I come from a region that is engaged in farming so I have invested in lands and planted crops such as tea, coffee, bananas, and other crops,” he said.
The youthful CS nominee also revealed that he did not own a car, asked why he didn’t despite his net worth, he stated that he preferred to invest instead.
Muriithi also revealed his ambitious plans to elevate the ministry, should his nomination be approved by parliament.
As part of his plan for the ministry, he vowed to ensure that every Kenyan has access to water, he also pledged to serve the people dutifully.
“Water is a human right and also a constitutional right. Service to my countrymen is service to God If this house approves my nomination, I will do what I can to ensure Kenyans have access to their rights,” he said.
Muriithi also announced plans to use sensitization to improve the ministry.
He pointed out that he will partner with the Ministry of Education to begin sensitization at the school level by encouraging irrigation and sustainable farming practices through 4K clubs among other projects.
“If approved by this house, I would start by sensitization. We need to appreciate that agriculture is not a by-the-way. It is an economic activity that generates income. I would work with the Ministry of Education on projects such as micro-irrigation that the ministry is rolling out, where we sink boreholes and give the opportunity to clubs such as 4K clubs to irrigate for sustainable farming,” he added.
