Covid-19 measures: Chaos as police disperse mourners at Jakoyo Midiwo’s burial

Chaos erupted at Ndori Primary School as the body of late Gem MP was flown to the institution for his burial ceremony.

Police officers implementing Covid-19 protocols lobbed tear gas canisters to disperse hundreds of mourners who turned up for the ceremony.

Trouble started when the mourners overrun the security officers moments after the helicopter ferrying the body of the late MP landed.

The mourners started running towards the aircraft while chanting slogans as they mourned their leader.

This happened as attempts by law enforcement officers to contain them went in vain.

Moments later, police fired teargas as mourners scampered for safety.

Some residents who were forced to leave the place told us that they will not leave until they are given a chance to view the body of the deceased.

According to John Juma, he said Jakoyo was a dedicated leader in their society and being denied a chance to bid him goodbye would not be good.

“It is very unfortunate that the police had to disperse us using teargas canister but even with that, we will not leave the place until we see him,” he said.

The late former legislator died two weeks ago after a short illness at Nairobi hospital.

According to the autopsy report, he succumbed to renal failure.

On Thursday, there was a church service at Citam Valley road led by the Church of Christ in Africa.
