State Department of Devolution Principal Secretary Julius Kiplangat Korir has been summoned to appear before Milimani Law Courts within seven days to face charges of causing grievous harm to his estranged wife while pregnant.

On Thursday, Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi summoned the PS to appear in person after the State Prosecutor, Alice Mwathangani made an application to have the summons issued against him for failing to appear in court.

Mathangani accused the state official of failing to appear before the court to take a plea.

According to a charge sheet filed in court, PS Korir allegedly assaulted his estranged wife Evelyn Chepkoech on September 17, 2020, at a time when she was expecting.

The summon against the PS comes months after he failed to stop his prosecution at the High Court.

Korir had moved to the High Court to challenge the case filed by his former wife but failed.

He sought to stop the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) from arresting and prosecuting him in connection with the criminal offence terming it illegal, in bad faith and infringement of his constitutional right.

Justice Anthony Murima, however, dismissed the petition noting the DPP was right to prosecute the PS for allegedly assaulting and injuring his estranged ex-wife.

According to a medical report dated November 20, 2018, Chepkoech, suffered injuries in the abdomen, forearm and legs after she was assaulted by the PS.

On the other hand, a P3 form signed by a police surgeon based at the police headquarters also showed she sustained thorax and abdomen injuries.

Court documents show that his wife reported the assault incident at Hardy Police Station in Karen on November 20, 2018.
