Cleophas Malala: Ruto is a pathological liar, never honest

The Democracy for Citizens’ Party Deputy Party Leader, Cleophas Malala, has, without blinking, accused President William Ruto of being a pathological liar who is never honest in his work.

Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Malala urged Kenyans to use a microscope to determine why Ruto is suddenly angered about a particular bill, the Anti-Money Laundering legislation, and whether his complaints are rooted in truth or political expediency.

Parliament not independent

Malala said that while he has long believed Ruto to be dishonest, he surprisingly agreed with him when the Head of State claimed that Parliament was corrupt.

According to Malala, this was the first time Ruto had spoken the truth.

“For the recent past, I have known President William Ruto as a pathological liar, but when he made remarks that Parliament is corrupt, for the first time, he spoke the truth.

“We have seen businesses transacted in Parliament, and the Executive interfering with the legislative work. The truth is, Parliament is not independent and it is corrupt,” Malala said.

The outspoken opposition figure went on to cite specific examples of alleged corruption.

“For instance, during the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, each senator was given Ksh10M, and everyone, including Senator Cherargei, knows that.

“Remember, during the passing of the 2024 Finance Bill, Juja MP George Koimburi admitted that MPs were being given money,” he added.

MPs serving the president

Malala further argued that MPs have abandoned their constitutional role of representing the people, instead serving the interests of President Ruto and his government.

He referred to a recent video that showed lawmakers openly lamenting to the president about the bills they had passed for him.

“Yesterday I saw a video of MPs lamenting to Ruto, saying: ‘Oh, we passed the SHA Bill for you, we passed the Finance Bill for you.’ So this means they have relegated their mandates as the representatives of the people. They are representing William Ruto,” Malala noted.

His remarks come amid a heated national debate following Ruto’s accusations during a joint Parliamentary Group meeting that some legislators had pocketed millions in bribes to influence the Anti-Money Laundering Bill.

Malala insisted that the bigger problem lies in the capture of Parliament by the Executive, and called on Kenyans to demand accountability from both institutions.
