CJ Koome appoints 202 magistrates to preside over key cases

Chief Justice (CJ) Martha Koome has appointed 202 magistrates to preside over cases involving disputes related to the environment, land, employment, and labour relations.

In a gazette notice dated October 10, 2025, Koome appointed 58 magistrates to preside over environment cases.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 26 (3) of the Environment and Land Court Act, 2011, I, Martha K. Koome, Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya, appoint the following magistrates to preside over cases involving disputes relating to Environment and Land, in the areas of jurisdiction of their current court stations and future stations deployed to from time to time, with effect from the date of gazettement,” read the notice in part.

At the same time, Koome designated 144 to handle labour and employment cases.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 29 (3) and (4) (b) of the Employment and Labour Relations Court Act, 2011, I, Martha K. Koome, Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya appoint the following magistrates to preside over the following employment and labour relations cases within their respective areas of jurisdiction,” read the notice.

The magistrates in this docket will deal with disputes arising from contracts of employment (excluding trade disputes under the Labour Relations Act, 2007) where employees’ gross monthly pay does not exceed Ksh80,000.00, as commenced and continued in accordance with the Employment and Labour Relations Court (Procedure) Rules, 2016.

They will also handle matters relating to offenses under the Work Injury Benefits Act, 2007; the Employment Act, 2007; and the Labour Institutions Act, 2007.

At the same time, the magistrates will deal with offenses under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2007, and offenses under the Labour Relations Act, 2007, with effect from the date of gazettement.

Some of the magistrates appointed in Environment and Land cases,  include Kemei Silas Kandie, Akida Kassim, Elizabeth Khanali, Mwera Atamba Lynn, Ng’ang’a Catherine Wanjiru, Muthoni Viola Serfinder Wakuthii, Otuke Shadrack Obure, Getenga Harriet Moraa, Oboge Edward Meshack Otieno, Marienga Tessy Elaine, Thibaru Mercy Kinanu, Wahinya Wa Kugwa, and Kabuteh Irene Wambui.
