Cherargei says Ruto is being fought for championing resource equity

By , July 31, 2025

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has defended President William Ruto against his critics, arguing that the head of state is facing intense opposition because he is attempting to bring equity in resource allocation across Kenya for the first time since independence.

Speaking on a local media station on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Cherargei attributed the challenges facing the current administration to historical issues that predate Ruto’s presidency.

“Some of these challenges we are facing in the country did not start with President Ruto. One of the critical issues is the stability of the country, the peace of the country, and equitable share of national revenue,” Cherargei said.

The outspoken senator claimed that Ruto’s efforts to redistribute national resources fairly across all regions, particularly through his broad-based agreement with ODM Leader Raila Odinga, have made him enemies among established interests who prefer to maintain the status quo.

“The reason President William Ruto is being fought very hard is because, for the first time since independence, he is trying to bring equity in terms of resource allocation in the country,” Cherargei declared.

National cake

He accused unnamed individuals of seeking to deny some regions access to what he described as the national cake, despite all Kenyans contributing to the tax base.

“There are individuals who do not wish some regions to access the national cake. Yet they forget that people from all 47 counties, from Namanga to Malaba and from Elwak to Mombasa, all pay taxes,” he emphasised.

However, he expressed support for the ODM’s recent call for a national stock-take, endorsing Raila Odinga’s approach to addressing governance issues such as corruption, devolution, and the Social Health Authority (SHA).

“I want to agree with the position taken by the ODM Central Committee, led by party leader Raila Amolo Odinga, that we need to do a stock-take. Let us stock-take as a country,” he said.

Marginalised areas

Additionally, the senator cited recent government initiatives in previously marginalised areas as evidence of this new approach to development.

“When we went to Homa Bay for celebrations, it was very impressive, because when you engage the locals there, they were seeing some of the development agenda being taken to that region, for the first time since the political differences that we have experienced in the country,” Cherargei noted.

He highlighted projects such as infrastructure improvements in Homa Bay County and the construction of the Mandera-Isiolo road as examples of how development is being extended to areas previously sidelined.
