First daughter Charlene Ruto on Friday, June 7, 2024, presided over the Lang’ata women’s prison beauty pageant as the chief guest.

Charlene, who was accompanied by Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor alias Jalango, opened the ceremony that will see the women’s prison choose its beauties for the year 2024.

The first daughter was also flanked by a bevvy of beauties drawn from the various beauty pageants in the counties.

The Miss Langata beauty pageant is one of the government’s ambitious reform programmes in Kenyan jails.

Beauty contest

During the ceremony, each contestant receives a round of applause as they walk past the judges in the country’s largest women’s prison, Lang’ata.

Similarly, the guards are not left out and some of them are allowed to dress up in accordance with the pageant.

The first beauty queen in the expansive prison was released in 2020 after serving an 18-month prison sentence.

Milcah Wanja received emotional welfare that drove prisoners, guards and even then the assistant commissioner in charge of Langata women’s prison Wanini Kireri.

Kireri, who passed on in 2022, is credited with remarkable prison reforms including bringing about the beauty pageants in the women’s prisons in the country.

Kireri’s efforts also led to the introduction of literacy programmes in Kenyan prisons that have seen a sharp rise in the take-up of education in penitentiaries.

During her time at the prisons department, she won awards among them Elder of The Spear (EBS) 2020, (ICPA) Outstanding Correctional Service Employee Award- 2019, Public Servant of The Year Award 2015, Heroes Award 2014, Special Recognition on Women’s Day 2014 and Xtreeme Teeneez -Life Time achievement 2014 among others.
