Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has issued a statement over an erroneous obituary of one of her staff members published on Thursday, September 30 in a local daily.
In the obituary whose screenshot has been making rounds on social media, the designation of the late Sammy Munoko Barasa at the university was not provided in what MMUST’s administration registered as a typographical error.
“Our attention has been drawn to a circulating newspaper screenshot on the death and funeral announcement of one of our staff members,” the Thursday, September 30 statement from the university read in part.
A spot check by K24 Digital revealed that Munoko’s obituary stated that the university, MMUST, was the deceased person instead of Munoko, a staff member attached to the Catering Department.
“It is with humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce the death of Masinde Muliro of Science and Technology that occurred on Tuesday 21, September 2021,” the first paragraph of the obituary read in part.
However, through a statement by the same university, MMUST clarified the error and confusion caused by the miscommunication.
“The Office of the Registrar (Administration), from whence the announcement originated from, wishes to clarify, correct and apologize for the miscommunication which appeared in today’s, 30 September 2021 Daily Nation newspaper on the Death and Funeral Announcement of the late Mr Sammy Munoko Barasa, who was a member of staff in the Catering Department.
“The statement should have read that it is with humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce the death of Mr Sammy Munoko Barasa of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology that occurred on Tuesday, 21 September 2021,” the statement from MMUST’s Directorate of Corporate Communication and Marketing said.
The late Munoko will be laid to rest on Saturday, October 2 at his home Nyange Nandorobo Village, Bungoma North Sub County.
