Babu Owino urges Sifuna to intensify criticism of govt

By , August 15, 2025

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has challenged Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to step up his criticism of the government, urging him to remain vocal in holding leaders accountable.

Speaking during the Law Society of Kenya’s annual conference in Kwale County on Friday, August 15, 2025, Babu delivered pointed messages to key political figures, emphasising that Sifuna should not relent in speaking truth to power.

“To my super-senator, Edwin Sifuna, continue injecting with the sealant and the needle of a camel,” Babu declared, using the metaphor to encourage Sifuna’s persistent criticism of government policies.

The MP also directed a message to President William Ruto, demanding adherence to constitutional principles.

“To the President of the Republic of Kenya, you must respect the Constitution,” Babu stated during his address.

He further encouraged Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to pursue his political ambitions.

“And to Excellency Kalonzo Musyoka, go ahead and conquer the nation,” he said.

Sifuna’s criticism

Over the last few weeks, Sifuna has been vocal about the Kenya Kwanza government, particularly the existing partnership under the UDA-ODM MOU.

Speaking during an interview on a local media station on July 22, 2025, Edwin Sifuna declared the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between his party and President William Ruto’s UDA party dead, citing a betrayal of the agreement’s core intent.

Sifuna disclosed that he had advised ODM against entering the formal agreement with UDA, warning of potential public relations disasters that would be difficult to manage.

“I have already declared this MOU dead, ” he stated.

“I am on record having advised the party against doing this MOU with UDA, and we still went ahead and entered that MOU, but you see, the beauty is that you are proven right every day,” he added.

The Secretary General criticised the government’s approach to the MoU, arguing that President William Ruto was not interested in the document’s details but rather wanted it for public relations purposes.

“The problem with doing a formal MOU with UDA is that it didn’t matter what the MOU said, the people from UDA, the government, William Ruto, is not interested in the details of the MOU… They wanted a document that they could then go and run a PR campaign around and say ‘Tumeungana‘, ‘We are together’, that is not what this document says,” Sifuna explained.
