Babu Owino: Delay in Sakaja’s impeachment is a betrayal to Nairobians

By , September 4, 2025

Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino, on Thursday, September 4, 2025, expressed regret over what he called an unnecessary delay in removing Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja from office through impeachment.

Speaking to Kameme TV, the outspoken lawmaker said it was painful that leaders who should stand with Nairobi residents had instead chosen to shield the Governor.

According to Babu, the excuse that Sakaja should be given more time to fix the county’s problems was nothing but a betrayal of struggling citizens.

People before politics

Babu stressed that lives must come before politics, arguing that service delivery had collapsed in the city.

He said it was wrong to expect that a governor who had failed for three years could suddenly turn things around in sixty days.

“Kitu ya muhimu ni kwamba Governor angeenda kama jana. Kwa sababu maisha ya watu ndio kitu ya maaana.

Wacha hao watu waishi kwanza, ndio upige siasa. Lakini hauwezi piga na wao siasa kama wamekufa, watakua wameenda,” Babu remarked.

The legislator pointed to Nairobi’s deplorable healthcare system, saying that hospitals lacked even the most basic supplies.

He lamented that many families were being forced to seek treatment outside the county or go without care altogether.

For him, delaying impeachment was equal to watching more residents suffer while politics takes centre stage.

Misused revenue

Babu further claimed that revenue collected within the county was being misused, with little accountability for where the money was going.

He insisted that billions had been lost while critical services continued to deteriorate.

“Hii budget yote imeliwa. County revenue, pesa ambayo inasanywa kwenye Nairobi County, hadi wa leo hakuna mtu anajua inaingia kwa bank account gani, inaingia kwa kikapu gani. Hii pesa inapotea,” he declared.

The MP maintained that Nairobians deserved better leadership and accountability.

He warned that protecting Sakaja only prolonged their suffering and eroded the little trust residents had left in county leadership. For him, the delay in impeachment was not only political shielding but also a clear betrayal of the people of Nairobi.

Apart from Babu Owino, leaders allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have also condemned the interference of the former Prime Minister and the President in the Nairobi impeachment case against Sakaja.
