Hundreds of people have been seen running across parts of South Africa’s commercial hub Johannesburg looting and torching shops believed to be owned by African immigrants.
The violence began mainly in the area of Jeppestown, which is close to the central business district.
But it soon spread to other areas like Denver, Malvern, Turffontein, Tembisa and other pockets of the city.
Videos widely shared on social media show several burnt cars in what looked like a second-hand car dealership.
Police have fired teargas, rubber bullets and stun grenades in an attempt to stop the looting.
It is not clear what is behind the attacks.
Police Minister Bheki Cele visited affected areas and has condemned the violence.
