45 vessels set to dock at Mombasa Port

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has announced that 45 vessels will dock at its terminals in the next two weeks.

This comes after the Ports Authority’s announcement of a record 52 vessels scheduled for docking a fortnight ago.

Of the 45 expected vessels, six are car carriers, one oil tanker, 22 container vessels, and 16 general cargo carriers.

Goods making their way into the country through the Mombasa Port will include wheat, which will arrive in four vessels distributed evenly over the two weeks.

Containers will make up the bulk of the shipments while steel, fertilizer, chemicals, and castor oil make up the rest of the cargo.

Cargo intake in Mombasa

KPA has experienced an increase in cargo volumes since the expansion of its container terminal which would allow larger vessels to dock. Container cargo handling increased by 2.33 million metric tonnes, an equivalent of 14.8 per cent in 2023 largely due to the expansion.

The managing body also installed three new cranes at the Port of Lamu in April, in a move to boost cargo handling operations at Kenya’s second port.
