Kiambu county government will distribute 106,000 tonnes of seeds to cereal farmers as part of efforts to improve the county’s food security.

Governor James Nyoro said the Sh48 million project would enhance food production and empower farmers.

In the first phase of the programme, 36,000 farmers will get two kilogrammes of maize seeds and two of beans each.

The consignment, includes 71,000 tonnes of maize seeds and 35,000 tonnes of beans which will be distributed directly to the farmers.

Nyoro said the county was planning to reach at least 100,000 farmers before the onset of long rains.

“The project will initially benefit 36,000 farmers. However, we hope to reach 100,000 farmers,” he said.

The seeds, the governor said, had passed the quality test having gone through a rigorous test by the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa.

“These seeds are adapted to particular agro-ecological zones,” he said.

The county government has also embarked on a programme to distribute 73,500 avocado and mango seedlings at the cost of Sh4.5 million.

Speaking at the county headquarters after flagging off the consignment, Nyoro said the seedlings would be delivered to homes of beneficiaries to ensure compliance with Covid-19 guidelines, especially the social distancing requirement stipulated by the Health ministry.
