Mt. Kenya lobbyists demand Gov’t action on corruption, effective use of taxes

A group of political lobbyists and residents from Mt Kenya East have called on the government to address corruption and waste to ensure Kenyans receive full value for their taxes.

They emphasized that while the government seeks to increase taxes to fund its spending, it should also ensure that the funds collected from Kenyans are effectively utilized.

Political lobbyist Kirangacha Mwaniki highlighted that a significant portion of the state budget is lost to multi-billion scandals, leaving Kenyans burdened with heavy taxes and poor service delivery.

“As Kenyans, we are willing to pay taxes, but our primary concern is the Government’s use of those funds,” he lamented.

Mwaniki noted that Kenyans are fed up with financing corruption and wastage, which is why they oppose tax increases.

The lobbyist, therefore, urged the government to support key anti-graft bodies like the Ethics And Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Judiciary through proper legislation and funding.

Furthermore, he insisted that there should be no untouchables in the fight against graft, and anyone found guilty should be held accountable, regardless of their status or political ties.

“We want to see corruption cases resolved swiftly in court and all proceeds from corruption recovered from the guilty parties,” he stated.

Embu resident and trader Charles Kimathi urged the government to involve Kenyans in every step of the budget-making process.

This, he argued, would give them a sense of ownership in financial matters and a say in how their money is spent.
