Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has declared Monday, June 17, 2024, a public holiday.

The day will mark Eid-Al-Adha, a special day in the Muslim world, and with Kindiki’s declaration, it means Kenyans will enjoy a holiday as those who profess the Islam faith celebrate the special day in their calendar.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares Monday, June 17, 2024, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-Al-Adha,” a statement posted by the deputy government spokesperson, Mwanaisha Chidzuga, read.

Eid-Al-Adha is translated as the Feast of Sacrifice and is the second of the two main Islamic holidays alongside Eid al-Fitr. In the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of the twelfth and final month of Dhu al-Hijja.

Celebrations are generally carried forward to the three following days, and as with Eid al-Fitr, the Eid prayer is performed on the morning of Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Adha is also sometimes called the Greater Eid.

Eid-ul-Adha is also used to mark the culmination of the annual pilgrimage to Muslims’s holy city of Mecca. The pilgrimage to Mecca is a mandatory religious duty for the Muslim faithful and should be carried out at least once in one’s lifetime by all.

Eid-al-Adha is celebrated in essence to retrace the steps of the Prophet Mohammed and recount Muslims’ devotion to God. It is also used to remember Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Isaac, when God told him to do so.
