World’s longest-serving referee honoured for 63 seasons and 5,000+ matches

At 78 years old, Ken Wright has been officially recognised as the longest-serving football referee in the world.
Hailing from Swansea, Wright has completed an incredible 63 successive seasons and officiated more than 5,000 matches across his legendary career. Far from slowing down, he is still taking charge of local matches in the Swansea Senior League, as well as overseeing early qualifying rounds for the FAW Welsh Cup and the FAW Amateur Trophy.
His six decades of unwavering commitment recently earned him recognition from both UEFA and Guinness World Records as the longest-serving referee in global football.
Starting at 15
Wright’s journey began in 1964 at just 15 years old, after being told he would not be able to play the game. According to his own recounting, his inaugural match, pitting Glantawe against South Gower at Cefn Coed Hospital on a pouring wet day, was a complete disaster. The game finished 13–4, and to this day, he still remembers the disputed goals and missed decisions.
Yet, from those humble beginnings, Wright rose through the ranks of local leagues to become an assistant referee in the League of Wales.
During the 1970s and ’80s, his career took him to some of English football’s most iconic venues, including Highbury, White Hart Lane, and Stamford Bridge, and saw him involved in matches featuring the likes of Swansea City and Manchester United.
Guinness World Record honour
Despite reaching the upper echelons of the game, Wright remains deeply committed to grassroots football.
The Guinness World Record recognition came as a surprise on August 12, 2026, as he was preparing to officiate a local fixture.
In a statement, Guinness World Records noted:
“Ken’s career reflects a rare and remarkable dedication to the sport, officiating through generations of changing rules, playing styles, and technology in the game while maintaining the fitness, focus, and love of football needed to keep stepping onto the field match after match, year after year. Reaching such a milestone speaks not just to longevity, but to a lifelong commitment to the game from the sidelines long after most have hung up their whistle.”
Wright’s self-reflections
Reflecting on the achievement with the Football Association of Wales, Ken shared:
“When you think of the number of countries in the world and the number of referees, I just can’t believe it’s now a fact that I’m the longest-serving in the world. To be the longest-serving referee in Wales would be an honour, Europe would be an even bigger honour, but when you talk about the whole world, it’s unreal, really.”
