Residents in Wajir county were last night left counting millions of losses after a fire outbreak in the town’s largest business market- Soko mjinga.

The market which is at the heart of the town and is the source of livelihood for thousands of traders in Wajir county was burnt to ashes with businessmen and women salvaging little to nothing of what was left of their business.

“Most of us were sleeping and we woke up to the news of a fire outbreak and now we are trying to salvage what we can,” Abdirahman, a businessman said.

Abdirahman has called on the county government to find the course of the fire and find a way to compensate those businessmen and women affected.

“We thank the fire department of municipality and Kenya military for the role they played in putting out the fire and we ask to help these people as most of them have children who are going back to school and compensate them for their losses,” Abdirahman urged.

The county government of Wajir has promised to take swift action and find the root cause of the recurrent incidents of fire outbreaks in business centres.

“It is not the first time such fire incidents is being witnessed in Soko Mjinga and other businesses in Wajir county and as county government, we will find the route cause,” Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi noted.

“My deepest thoughts and prayers are with the traders and business owners who have lost their business in the fire,” he added.
