23-year-old Maseno University student accused of raping two first years arrested

Law enforcement authorities have arrested a 23-year-old male student in connection with a disturbing rape incident that occurred on April 14, 2024.

According to the Police, they raided Maseno’s Chulaimbo area ambushing and arresting Jacktone Oluoch Owiti who had a phone belonging to one of the victims of rape.

“A 23-year-old male student at Maseno University is in custody following his suspected involvement in a violent robbery and rape of two fellow students from the same campus which occurred on the night of April 14, 2024,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said.

“Jacktone Oluoch Owiti was ambushed at his house in Maseno’s Chulaimbo area, and one of the victims’ phones which was stolen on the fateful night found in his possession.”

The victims, two first-year students aged 19 and 20, were subjected to a horrifying attack while sleeping in their shared room.

The police revealed that armed assailants wielding a machete and a dagger forcibly entered their residence, threatening the victims with violence.

The assailants proceeded to sexually assault the young women and fled the scene with their smartphones, leaving the victims traumatized.

“In the April incident reported to the police by a member of community policing within Nyawita area, the two 1st year students aged 19 and 20 were attacked while sleeping in their shared room in the dead of the night, by two assailants who were armed with a machete and a dagger.

“Kicking the door open and threatening the fear-stricken girls with stabs should they make a murmur, the agents from hell forced themselves on the victims before disappearing with their smartphones,” the statement added.

Prompt action was taken as the victims sought assistance from their neighbours, who responded swiftly to ensure that the victims received urgent medical attention. Law enforcement agencies were alerted, leading to an extensive investigation into the crime.

“After making sure that the attackers were out of the vicinity, the victims screamed for help where neighbours responded by assisting them to a local hospital for medical attention,” DCI revealed.

The diligent efforts of Kisumu West detectives have resulted in the arrest of the first suspect in the case. The suspect presented for identification by witnesses, and DNA sampling was conducted to bolster the evidence against him.

He has been arraigned to face charges related to his alleged involvement in the reprehensible assault on his fellow students.

New leads have emerged, providing critical information that has revitalized efforts to bring all perpetrators to justice.

“Kisumu West detectives who relentlessly pursued the case eventually caught up with the first suspect on May 15, who was yesterday paraded for identification, DNA sampling conducted and later arraigned. New leads to his accomplice(s) have since been obtained and the investigators are hot on their trail,” the statement added.
