Suspect wanted for rape, robbery nabbed in Kabete

Detectives have confirmed the arrest of a robbery and rape suspect who has been on the run since February 17, 2024.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal (DCI) investigations noted that James Mwangi Wanjahi, 39, who was flushed out from his hideout within Kabete area, Nairobi county, lured a 40-year-old woman into a business deal before assaulting her.

The suspect is also accused of stealing his victim’s mobile phone which has since been recovered after committing the heinous act.

“Crime research detectives based at DCI Headquarters have arrested a suspect of robbery and rape who was on the run since February 17, 2024, after luring a 40-year-old woman into a business deal only to commit the abominable act,’ DCI said.

“James Mwangi Wanjahi, 39 was flushed from his hideout within Kabete area, and a phone stolen from the Githurai-based businesswoman recovered.”

On the said day, the suspect is said to have posed as a customer who knew her, he asked her to meet him at Nairobi CBD to discuss a business deal on some supplies he needed.

However, when the victim boarded his car to proceed to a convenient place for their rendezvous, the woman passed out.

She regained her senses later and found herself stripped half naked, raped and abandoned in the same car in a thicket in Gilgil.

The suspect who has since been escorted to Gilgil police station also robbed her of Ksh17,000.

“In the February incident, the victim reported at Kikopey Police Post in Gilgil that a man posing as a customer who knew her had called her to Nairobi CBD to discuss a business deal on some supplies that he needed, but turned against her when she boarded “his” car to go to a convenient place for the discussion.

“On boarding the vehicle, she had passed out only to gain her senses hours later to find herself abandoned in the same car at a thicket in Gilgil, robbed of cash Sh17k, stripped half-naked and raped,’ DCI said.

He is currently cooling his heels in police custody pending arraignment.
