24-year-old varsity student commits suicide in Mombasa

A third-year engineering student at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has died in what detectives believe to be suicide.

24-year-old Gregory Mutinda was found lying on the floor of his rented house in the Kaa Chonjo area of Tudor, Mombasa county.

According to police OB number 64/26/1/ 2023, members of the public led police officers to the said house where the door was forcefully opened since it had been locked from the inside.

“The body of a young man was lying on the floor and a syringe with some fluids and pesticide powder beside him. A kitchen knife and blood-stained clothes were also found on the floor of the house,” part of the police statement reads.

According to preliminary investigations, the deceased stabbed himself to death after it took him a long time to die having injected himself with an unknown lethal substance and swallowed the pesticide powder.

At the time of his death, he was on attachment at Kenya pipeline Changamwe.

The deceased’s girlfriend Mercy Munyao, who is assisting police with ongoing investigations, informed police they had last communicated on Monday morning.

“The two talked through mobile phone and later in the afternoon she called again the deceased did not pick up her calls she became suspicious and went to the deceased house to check on him in the company of another friend only to find the door locked from inside and on checking through the window she could see him lying on the floor and she, therefore, raised alarm,” she stated.

The body has been moved to the Coast General mortuary awaiting postmortem.
