Sex workers in Mombasa have now decried dishonest Mpesa reversals from customers after offering sexual services.
According to the sex workers, the said clients have currently developed a trend of reversing money after receiving services.
This, according to them has been highly fueled by the hike in prices of the services following the harsh economic times witnessed in the country.
Nkoko Injuu Africa, (an NGO that champions sex workers’ rights), through its Executive Director Maryline Laini said that the organization was alarmed by the number of cases reported regarding the incident.
“There are several cases where a client sends money and a member confirms receipt of the same however the money is reversed from their Mpesa account shortly after,” she said
Laini added that they were in the process of launching safer means of payment that will be used to pay for services rendered.
“There are ongoing negotiations, with relevant organizations on how to secure payments,” Laini stated.
She also stated that sex workers will not entertain clients seeking services on credit.
“Times are hard we advise our clients that we are not offering services on credit unless in areas where one is seeking for favors and kindness in return, as an organization we have advised our members that officials we will not handle cases based on credit payment, as for the new sex workers we discourage the trend of asking for cash first,” she said.
Last week, the sex workers hiked their prices following the harsh economic times skyrocketing prices of basic commodities in the country.
Their new rates now stand at between Ksh500 and Ksh300 for services with no romance while clients who want services accompanied with romance will part with Ksh1,000.
Clients who prefer services with no protection will now have to pay Ksh3,000.
