Learning has been disrupted at Ogada Primary School in South Kabuoch, Ndhiwa Sub County, Homa Bay county due to poor hygiene in the institution.

Learners were sent home and studies suspended after a directive from public health officers declared the school unfit for habitation. The officers aimed to avert an outbreak and spread of waterborne diseases.

The public health officers said that the school lacked adequate pit latrines and declared it unsafe for use.

South Kabuoch ward public health officer Tobias Okong’o served the school administration with a notice over the poor state of hygiene adding the available latrines were filled up.

“The available infrastructures are in deplorable condition. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure and to avoid possible outbreak of cholera,” Okong’o said.

The notice was served under provisions of the public health Act Cap 242 sections 155,119 and the school health policy and rules.

Poor hygiene

The school head teacher Andrew Opiyo said they received the letter and responded as directed.

He said the school was established in 2014 and has been operating with temporary pit latrines.

“We have tried to put up new latrines without success due to financial constraints. We’re appealing to well-wishers to come to our aid,” Opiyo said.

The school board of management Chairman Paul Nyakwae urged the government to build modern toilets for the school.

He urged Ndhiwa MP Martin Owino to intervene by allocating money from National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF) to improve the school infrastructure.
