Religious leaders in Homa Bay have expressed concern over the failure of different groups to protect trees after they are planted.
The clergy called for civic education among environmental groups to protect trees after they are planted as President William Ruto gave a directive that 15 billion trees be planted by 2032.
But there is a concern that this may not be achieved if trees that are planted are not taken care of.
Evangelical Women Alliance (EWA) and the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims said trees that are planted should be protected from different forms of destruction.
EWA chairperson Siprina Andal and Supkem Secretary Nuhu Abdul Masud said the country may not achieve its desired environmental goals if the trees are not protected.
Pastor Andal challenged other religious leaders to take part in environmental conservation and encourage their congregation to do the same.
She spoke when EWA members planted trees at Rabuor Masawa primary school, Got Kochungo and Lala primary school.
Each learning institution got 100 seedlings from the group.
Pastor Andal said she will take the lead in ensuring the trees grow to maturity.
Masud called on the management of different institutions where trees are planted to invest in the protection of the trees.
He proposed putting up fences and gates to control movement in and out of such premises.
Tree cover in Homa Bay is 3.18 per cent against the recommended 10 per cent.
