Mombasa: 2 men living in cave die after wall collapses on them

Two men have died after a wall collapsed on them in Likoni sub-county, Mombasa county.

Mombasa County Police Commander Stephen Matu said that the two namely Abdallah Mwabozda and Tsuma Mwastaku were living inside caves along the Indian Ocean shores when the wall collapsed on them while they were asleep.

“A wall separating the Indian Ocean and the parts of Likoni collapsed due to the ongoing rains> Unfortunately there are families who reside inside the caves along the Indian Ocean. Stones from the collapsed wall hit on them,” he noted.

The police boss added that one more person Ibrahim Omar had been rushed to the Coast General Referral and Teaching Hospital in critical condition.

“Two died on the spot while a third victim who had been trapped inside the debris of the collapsed wall is fighting for his life at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital,” he added.

He called on residents to avoid residing in such areas during this time when the county had received increased rainfall.

An eyewitness who visited his kin in the wee hours of Thursday morning stated that he witnessed his brother being crushed to death by a huge stone that fell from the wall before the entire wall collapsed on the victims as they slept.

“I had just arrived to check on my brother Mwastaku. Upon arrival, l saw a huge rock crushing towards their sleeping area before they were covered by the collapsed wall. l escaped and raised alarm,” he said.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Coast General Mortuary awaiting postmortem exercise.
