Ministry of Health to introduce psychosocial rehabilitation for individuals with mental illnesses in Bungoma
By K24 Editorial, January 8, 2024The Ministry of Health has announced plans to introduce psychosocial rehabilitation centres for individuals struggling with mental illnesses in Bungoma County.
In a statement, the Susan Nakhumicha-led docket announced that the development follows after a consultative meeting consisting of professionals and mental health specialists and the move is meant to address mental health concerns in Bungoma County and the Western region.
During the meeting led by CS Nakhumicha’s technical advisor Dr Akoto, the various health specialists agreed to engage stakeholders as they acknowledged the need to include international partners to secure funding for a two-year demonstration project.

Akoto also reiterated the government’s commitment to tackle the mental health issue.
“The Bungoma Health Link team, consisting of professionals and mental health specialists, met with Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha S. Wafula technical advisor to address mental health concerns in Bungoma County and Western Kenya. They aim to introduce psychosocial rehabilitation for individuals with mental illnesses.
“During the meeting, attended by CS Technical Advisor Dr. Anthony Akoto and Director of Mental Health Dr. Simon Njuguna, the team highlighted the need to engage stakeholders, including international partners, to secure funds for a two-year demonstration project. Dr. Akoto, representing the CS, underscored the government’s commitment to tackling mental health challenges within the scope of achieving Universal Health Coverage,” the Ministry of Health stated.
