Mogoiywet primary school in Waitaluk ward, Kiminini Constituency in Trans Nzoia County has been closed indefinitely after the body of a grade 6 pupil was found rotting in the ceiling of one of the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) classrooms.
Jackson Muganda, a parent in the school, said the female pupil went missing two months ago just a few days after completing her Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) examinations.
“We are reeling in shock because of this unfortunate incident. Actually, the girl went missing in November last year after finishing her grade 6 assessment and she was set to join grade seven only to be found dead in the ceiling of one classroom,” Muganda said.
Muganda further revealed that the body was discovered by some pupils who smelled the stench.
Douglas Amadi, the school’s head, confirmed that the school was closed following a consultation between the school management, the Ministry of Education and the African Inland Church (AIC) the school’s sponsor.
“Yes it is true we have closed the school until Monday next week following stakeholder’s consultations that resolved to close the school to pave the way for investigations,” Amadi said.
He stated that the school management has organized a counselling session for all the 632 pupils scheduled for Monday next week.
Kiminini Sub County Police Commander John Onditi confirmed the incident and revealed that the investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the minor’s death.
“It is indeed very sad to lose such a young girl in this manner. Our officers have launched investigations and are piecing together vital information to determine what exactly led to the death of the pupil and we shall leave no stone unturned,” Onditi said.
He also stated that neither her parents nor relatives reported the girl’s disappearance at any police station.
Her body has been taken to Kitale County Referral Hospital.
