All fishing activities will be suspended in Bondo and Rarieda sub-counties beginning today, Monday, August 8, 2022, until after the general election.
According to the chairman of Luanda K’otieno Beach Management Unit (BMU) George Owuor Otuoma, they have resolved that no fisherman will be allowed to go for their normal fishing expedition until August 10, 2022, when the voting process shall have been completed.
This, they say will give all the fishermen who are registered voters and the general population along the beaches ample time to exercise their rights and participate in the general election.
“We have stopped any fishing activity at Lwanda K’otieno beach and its environs and ordered those residing here to go back to their respective counties to cast their votes,” Owuor stated adding that they would only return after showing proof of voting.
Owuor further revealed that they will be conducting a crackdown to ensure that anybody who registered as a voter elsewhere is compelled to travel back to wherever they registered and cast their votes before they can be allowed to come back.
The BMU chairman assured of their commitment to help in ensuring 100 per cent voter turnout across the region and therefore called on his colleagues from other beaches across the region to ensure that no vote is left out.
“Stopping the fishing activity demonstrate the seriousness we take this year’s polls,” he noted.
Similar sentiments have been echoed by the Vice Chairman of Yimbo BMU Network Julius Odembo who stated that they are hoping all liquor outlets that operate along those beaches will also be closed.
He stated that it is only through participation in the elections that they shall be able to put in place good leaders who will address their grievances which include insecurity, unemployment and unregulated fish prices among others.
