It was a comical moment when Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua misread his oath during the just concluded swearing-in ceremony at Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi.
While reading the oath administered to him by Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi, Gachagua seemed to read from a different script.
Amadi was forced to stop the oath and ask Gachagua to do a retake, an occurrence that has since sparked humour on social media.
Some netizens took up the confusion and turned it into humour lightly saying that he had embarrassed the vote-rich Mount Kenya region.
Others termed the confusion as a result of overwhelming joy that had filled him having risen from a mere District Officer during the tenure of late president Daniel Arap Moi.
Gachagua later became outgone President Uhuru Kenyatta’s personal assistant before he ventured into politics successfully becoming the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mathira Constituency in Nyeri.
Gachagua was picked as Ruto’s running mate after a series of consultations and interviews beating among others Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru, Kandara MP Alice Wahome and former Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki among others.
The deputy president has been an ardent supporter of Ruto since he became an MP, support that he said resulted in his humiliation by different government machinery for going against the wishes of then President Kenyatta.
Today, September 13, Gachagua took over the deputy president’s position from William Ruto who has ascended to the most powerful position in the country after beating Raila Odinga in the presidential elections held on August 9, 2022.
