Transport and Roads Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen on Saturday escaped unhurt after a helicopter ferrying him crash landed at Mwachon in Eldama Ravine, Baringo county.

While confirming the incident, the area police commander Joseph Ongaya stated that the helicopter ferrying CS Murkomen and four other passengers including Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Chairman Caleb Kositany, crash-landed as it attempted to take off.

He noted that the chopper may have lost power before crash landing, however, the commander assured citizens that police were investigating to establish what happened to the helicopter.

Ongaya added that the CS and the others were headed to a funeral when the mind-morning incident occurred.

“No one was injured during the mid-morning accident. We are yet to establish what exactly happened to the helicopter,” Ongaya stated.

The latest incident comes days after a mid-air collision involving a passenger plane and a school aircraft.

According to authorities, a student pilot and trainer were killed in the incident after their aircraft collided with the passenger plane.

The passenger plane ferrying 44 passengers who escaped unhurt returned to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport after the incident.

“Kenya Civil Aviation Authority wishes to confirm that an aircraft accident occurred at 10:05hrs involving a Cessna aircraft belonging to Ninety-Nines Flying School and a Dash 8 belonging to Safarilink Aviation Limited,” the authority said.

“The aircraft had two crew on board; an instructor and a student. Investigations to determine the cause of the accident are being carried out by the relevant authorities. We condole with the families, friends and relatives of the deceased,” the authority added.
