Carrick hails Manchester United mentality after huge comeback win against Ipswich

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick spoke highly of his team’s response after United picked up their 5-2 win against Ipswich Town on Sunday, August 30, at Old Trafford.
Starting from an opening setback to Hull City on Saturday, August 22, 2026, the Red Devils came firing on all cylinders with Bruno Fernandes’s hat-trick, leading them to a 5-2 win over Gary O’Neill’s team.
While reiterating his earlier stance of not taking the previous defeat out of context, Carrick noted that every team is expected to drop points, but he was delighted with how his side bounced back against Ipswich.

“We are delighted with the performance. It was a great result, and while last week was disappointing, we didn’t let it drag us down. We learned from it and grew,” Carrick said.
He insisted that the resilience and confidence displayed during the match reflected the true character of the squad.

“To go behind like we did today and show that stubbornness, belief, confidence, and spirit—to have that mentality—that’s the biggest thing for me today.”
The gaffer also maintained that he retains full trust in his players, citing their strong track record prior to the opening-day setback against Hull City.

“I have a lot of confidence in this group of players. We have had good runs in the past, and they showed today what they are capable of doing.”
After trailing from an Ipswich opener in the half-hour mark, United levelled matters just before the half-time break, before they leapt into the lead for the first time after Harry Maguire’s effort came off Jacob Greaves for a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute.
Bruno’s starring performance against Ipswich
Bruno then popped up five minutes later to insulate the lead further, scoring a 65th-minute penalty after Matheus Cunha was fouled while through on goal as United upped the tempo.
The 2026 Premier League PFA player of the year then sealed his treble form close range, beating Ipswich keeper after an effort from Mbeumo was deflected to his path. He then returned the favour to Mbeumo for United’s fifth goal at the 82nd minute mark.
