World Cup: Tuchel warns fans against expecting England to shine with glamorous performances

The England boss Thomas Tuchel has warned against expecting flashy performances from his Three Lions team, stating that the knockout stages are not about glamorous wins or stylish victories but simply about getting the job done.

Speaking ahead of their Round of 16 knockout clash, the gaffer acknowledged that it will be a tough test against the African side, whom he described as heavily committed to defending and shutting down opposition space, as witnessed during their group phase fixtures.

Sébastien Desabre’s team held Portugal to a gusty draw in their opening group tie before conceding a late goal in the 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their second group encounter.

The manager reiterated his belief that the Three Lions will improve after advancing from the group stages, saying he is ready to take the team to another level with a strong display against DR Congo.

“We will see the best of us once we overcome the next rounds and progress to the next phase, once we play at a level where teams actually want to beat us, rather than just hold us, keep us out, and refuse to let us play our game,” he stated.

“I think this is not the moment to shine and expect glamorous performances. This is the moment to go through, step up, and show individual quality.”

The coach also predicted a match demanding immense patience from his team, tipping the African nation to defend in numbers against them.

England previously struggled to break down Ghana in their second group stage match, where they were frustrated to a barren draw.

They had a taste of the same defensive tactics in their final group game but managed to crack the code with a two-goal victory courtesy of Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. Having seen those tactics deployed effectively before, the coach expects their next opponents to adopt a similar strategy.

“No one created clear chances against them or scored goals easily against them. Colombia struggled, and the same goes for Portugal. They are committed to defending and are so well-drilled, so it will be a game of patience once more,” he said of the DR Congo’s opposition.

The round of 32 winner will set up a clash against host Mexico in the round of 16 on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at the Mexico City Stadium.
