World Cup: South Africa’s keeper Ronwen Williams hopeful despite opening defeat to Mexico

By , June 12, 2026

South Africa’s goalkeeper Ronwen Williams insists Bafana Bafana still have everything to play for, despite a gruelling start to their 2026 World Cup campaign.

Hugo Broos’ men suffered a chaotic 2-0 defeat to hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on Thursday, June 11, finishing the match with nine men after both Themba Zwane and Sphephelo ‘Yaya’ Sithole were shown red cards.

The mistake-riddled loss left South Africa rooted to the bottom of their group, which also has South Korea and the Czech Republic, who are playing out in the other group clash currently ongoing.

Reflecting on the defeat, the Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper admitted that conceding early completely derailed their tactical masterplan.

“We did not want to concede in the first 20 minutes, but that is exactly what happened,” Williams said. “We wanted to control our nerves, but we lacked composure in the final third and lost key players to red cards. Still, we cannot give up. We have two games to go, and we have to keep hope alive.”

Addressing the team’s uncharacteristic disciplinary meltdown on the world stage, the captain defended his teammates, suggesting the overwhelming atmosphere at the Azteca got the better of them.

“It is very uncharacteristic of us. It came down to raw emotion,” Williams added. “This is probably one of the biggest, most important games many of us have ever played,” he stated.

The skipper was a standout performer, producing four massive saves, preventing the scoreline from getting much worse.

The damage was, however, done in the second half after Raúl Jiménez scored the second in the 67th minute, adding to Julián Quiñones’ opener to put the game beyond the ten-man Bafana Bafana team.

The African side, who made their return to the global stage, now shift focus to their next clash against the Czech on Thursday, June 18, 2026, with the likes of Williams being looked upon to provide leadership, with sights set on turning around their fortunes and reaching the knockout stage as a priority.
