World Cup: Sepp Blatter tears into FIFA over decision to suspend Balogun’s red card

By , July 6, 2026

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter has taken a swipe at world football’s governing body following the controversial decision to rescind a red card issued to United States striker Folarin Balogun.

In a statement posted to X on Monday, July 6, 2026, the former FIFA chief castigated the ruling, labelling it a blatant case of political interference that severely compromises the sport’s integrity.

While borrowing from Latin, the former supremo posed a pointed question: “Quo vadis, FIFA?” (Where are you going, FIFA?), warning that the organisation is treading down a dangerous path by allowing external political actors to influence its judicial decisions.

Trump’s intervention

“Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls,” Blatter stated vehemently. “They are overturned by rules, evidence, and independent bodies. If a U.S. president intervenes with the FIFA president, and a player is suddenly cleared before a World Cup knockout match — the question is unavoidable: ‘Quo vadis, FIFA?’ Blatter posed.

Blatter’s remarks come amid widespread reports that U.S. President Donald Trump called FIFA chief Gianni Infantino to personally request a review of the suspension handed to the American forward.

“Football must never become a playground for political power,” Blatter added, warning against letting external forces dictate administrative outcomes.

Balogun had been facing an automatic one-game suspension following his red card in the 64th minute of the round of 32 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Eligible for Belgium

The suspension would have ruled him out of the United States’ crucial round of 16 clash against Belgium.

In a dramatic turn of events on Sunday, July 5, 2026, FIFA’s disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and controversially lifted the red card entirely.

“By operation of Article 27 FDC, the implementation of the automatic match suspension for USA player Folarin Balogun is suspended for a probationary period of one (1) year,” the governing body’s statement read.

While FIFA cited specific clauses within its disciplinary code to justify the reversal, the explanation has done little to satisfy Blatter, who remains deeply skeptical of the decision’s sudden timing.

The decision sparked mixed reactions, with Trump thanking FIFA for overturning the ban as the Belgian Football Association expressed being “astonished” by FIFA’s decision.
