World Cup: Martinez defends Ronaldo and Portugal after DR Congo draw

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has stood by his team’s display and brushed aside criticism surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s lack of goals after Portugal settled for a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening Group K match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Houston Stadium on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
The Europeans made a bright start, taking the lead just six minutes into the contest through Joao Neves. Portugal looked comfortable during the early exchanges but failed to capitalise on their dominance. DR Congo, appearing at the World Cup for the first time in 52 years, fought back and found an equaliser through Yoane Wissa to claim a memorable point.

Ronaldo, now 41, remained on the pitch throughout the match but struggled to influence proceedings in attack and was unable to add to his goal tally.
When questioned about whether the experienced forward should be withdrawn during closely contested matches, Martinez firmly rejected the suggestion.

“It makes no sense to take out the best goalscorer in world football in a match where you need goals,” he said after the game.
According to Martinez, Portugal’s difficulties began after scoring the opener. He noted that the team eased off its attacking approach, allowing DR Congo to regroup and strengthen defensively.

“We started very well, controlled the game and entered the final third effectively,” he said. “But after scoring, instead of pushing for a second goal, we became more focused on possession. That reduced our depth and gave DR Congo space to counterattack.”
Following Neves’ early strike, Portugal created a few clear-cut opportunities and found it difficult to penetrate a disciplined Congolese defense. The African side remained organised at the back and successfully held on for an important result in a challenging group, following a first-half minute leveller by Yoane Wissa.
Martinez called for patience and perspective, emphasising that a single result at the beginning of a World Cup campaign should not be overinterpreted.
“This is just the first game,” Martinez said. “We will analyse it, correct our mistakes and prepare for the next match.”
Portugal will return to action against Uzbekistan on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in Houston.
