World Cup: Colombia coach banks on well-oiled machine to thwart Ronaldo and Portugal stars

Colombia coach Nestor Lorenzo has stressed the importance of a disciplined approach as they take on Portugal in the World Cup group clash on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

The South American nation has already booked its slot in the round of 32 ahead of the encounter in Miami and could be assured of Group K’s top spot if it avoids defeat as it pits its wits against the team, led by Cristiano Ronaldo and an array of other stars plying the top five European leagues.

Finishing second could draw a tougher path in the knockout stage for the South Americans, whose tournament kicked off with back-to-back wins against Uzbekistan and DR Congo in a 1-0 score line.

England or Croatia is among the potential opponents for the team that will finish second in the group.

Portugal’s strengths

“We will try to maintain our style and our footballing identity,” he said as quoted by Al Jazeera.

“But without a doubt, we have to pay attention to the other characteristics and strengths [that Portugal] has. It is a very well-coached team. They have a coach and players who are at the elite level of world football … and ‌that shows in their game.”

Lorenzo singled out the Al Nassr star as he confessed to the threat posed by Ronaldo, who scored twice in the last match, and Vitinha, the defensive midfielder known for his ball control, work rate, and playmaking abilities.

“Both Vitinha and Ronaldo are decisive players. One in the organisation of the game and the quality of his playmaking, and the other in finishing,” he added. “So we absolutely cannot leave them alone or neglect them. Hopefully, the team collective will be well-oiled,” he explained.

Roberto Martinez’s team can dislodge Colombia from first place in the group if they beat the South Americans, as they are on a two-point difference.

A draw will be enough to see Colombia remain in pole position in the group
