Recently appointed Tunisia coach Herve Renard will take charge of his first match when the North Africans meet Japan in a crucial Group F clash at the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

The Tunisian Football Federation made a dramatic managerial change after the team’s heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening group-stage fixture. Sabri Lamouchi was relieved of his duties and replaced by the experienced French tactician, who arrives with a reputation for inspiring teams during difficult moments.

The decision came after a worrying run of results that also included a 5-0 loss to Belgium in a pre-tournament friendly. With Tunisia now facing the prospect of an early exit, federation officials have turned to Renard in the hope that he can quickly restore confidence within the squad.

Renard speaks

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s encounter against Japan, Renard acknowledged the magnitude of the task facing his side.

“There are no excuses,” he said at a press conference 24 hours before kick-off. “We have to dig deep and find the resources to win a match that will restore belief and lift a nation still reeling from a disappointing opener.”

The 57-year-old wasted no time getting to work after arriving in Monterrey on June 16. Known for his motivational leadership, Renard immediately addressed the players with a passionate speech that quickly gained traction online and was warmly received by Tunisian supporters.

In the widely shared video, he challenged the squad to respond positively to their disappointing start.

“If we were to go home today, you know what would happen,” he said in the viral video. “People are angry, and that’s understandable. But we’re at the World Cup. We have to respond, and fast. You’re fortunate to be here. So now we go again – let’s put things right!”

Team captain Ellyes Skhiri also expressed optimism about the coaching change, saying the players had already noticed a shift in atmosphere since Renard’s arrival.

“He brings a different energy and mindset. We’re following his lead, because it’s about what’s best for the team,” said the Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder.

Many Tunisian fans will be hoping Renard can recreate the kind of success he achieved at the 2022 World Cup, when he guided Saudi Arabia to a famous victory over eventual champions Argentina. However, the veteran coach insisted he is focused solely on the challenge immediately ahead.

“I’m not interested in the past, only the next match against Japan,” he said. “I’m not even focusing on the third match [against the Netherlands]. This second match is critical. We have to stay united, work as a team and show determination and focus.”

Group F outlook

After the opening round of matches, Sweden sit atop Group F with three points. Japan and the Netherlands each have one point following their draw, while Tunisia remain bottom of the standings without a point and a goal difference of minus four.

Although it remains too soon to judge the full impact of Renard’s appointment, his arrival has undoubtedly changed the mood around the Tunisian camp. His experience, personality and track record have added an extra layer of intrigue ahead of the meeting with Japan, and Tunisian officials will be hoping their bold decision proves to be the catalyst for a revival.
